Growing up in a Scandinavian household, with an architect mother and an engineer father, there was little colour or pattern in Reeta Ek’s childhood home. However, perhaps rebelling against this somewhat austere, monochrome early life, Ek pursued a fine art degree where she was drawn to highly decorative themes and her work took on a painterly quality: brush strokes, colour and texture are clearly visible in her imagery. Ek now works primarily as a textile designer, creating interesting prints and patterns in soft furnishing and clothing lines both for her own brand and a number of Finnish companies, including Marimekko.
With the original elements of English Rose being very small (just 2-10cm) and hand painted in black and white, expanding them and adding colour whilst maintaining their original qualities presented a challenge. However, the huge dramatic blooms and saturated colour of English Rose are wonderfully eye-catching and Ek was subsequently invited by FEATHR to re-create them in five more colourways and as fabric and cushions.
Ek recently won Design Forum Finland’s Young Designer of the Year; the first textile designer to have been awarded this accolade.
