As an insomniac teenager, often going without sleep for up to six or seven days at a time, American Michael Massaia would walk the streets at night simply as a way to occupy himself. Carrying a camera became a useful device to justify his presence when - inevitably - he would be stopped by police.
Discovering a talent for photography and a passion for print-making, Massaia is a specialist in black and white, intensely detailed fine art photography. The crowds and chaos of Manhattan melt away in the early hours of the morning – the time when Massaia was drawn to the emptiness and desolation of Central Park. Bow Bridge, its reflection creating a perfect ellipse in the still water, is part of a portfolio of dramatic and haunting images taken during these night walks. Massaia's work continues to be informed by the night. Recent portfolios include stunning interior shots of a closed Grand Central Station and images of sunbathers in Central Park – eyes closed, clothes in disarray, vulnerable and oblivious to Massaia's presence – taken during the day but printed as if at night.
