Melissa Scallan is a writer, adviser and speaker with dual interests: higher education and contemporary art.
She's the author of the bestselling student guide Starting University: What to Expect, How to Prepare, Go and Enjoy. It's a practical and easy-to-read book for students preparing for university in the UK. She's an adviser to UCAS and was a panellist on the April 2020 Facebook Live webinar, which has been viewed over 60,000 times. She also visits schools to talk to sixth form students about preparing for university.
With regard to contemporary art, Melissa creates a regular 5-7 page art column for Hedge, a luxury magazine for London's hedge fund community. She's as interested in the artists as much as their artwork and likes to understand who they are, where they've come from, their background and experiences, their inspirations and motivations, and their hopes and aspirations for the future. Wherever possible, she interviews the artists to uncover something about them, their work or the creative processes involved, which wouldn't have been revealed through desk research alone. She also writes copy and content for other magazines, for artists, gallery publications and websites, and provides advice on art purchases, delivers talks and tours on art, and is a Secret Art Prize judge.
Melissa has a Master's degree in psychology from the London School of Economics and a background in research.
